Idiot Abroad,
episode 7
The socially awkward
Fabian strikes again. I ask a black person where he's from. He
answers in a perfect, even dialect-coloured Flemish: 'Uhm, I was born
here, I'm Belgian.' Going 'No waaay, dude! Wow!' is probably not the
best thing to do. At that point the conversation was over.
Also, the next time
I walk past a bookstore and go like 'Let's just have a little look,
shall we?', just slap me in the face. I literally handed my
scholarship over to the lady at the cash desk, all voluntarily.
Buying books is a fetish. Now I'm penniless, but happy – after all,
that is a good thing now that I'm thinking about it.
I'm a bit behind the
schedule with this post, but that's because in the weekend, I had a
blast in the Ardennes. Belgians are very proud of their 'mountains,'
even though they look like any random forest back at home to me. Yet
the villages are calm and picturesque, and the Erasmus people had an
awesome three-day party right in the heart of it. So we dressed up
silly, gave a few Czech words a new meaning and broke each other some
hearts. I only have the best memories (apart from the parts that
I had a blackout, that is). That's how the
world rolls.
We have also been
incredibly lucky with the weather, with about 20 degrees and
cloudless skies. Feels more like summer than spring really. It's a
tough choice between attending classes and chilling in the park, but
I guess you know what wins. Let's see if it lasts.
What's up next?
Easter holidays. In the first week, the world will come to me (summer
Dutch course reunion, yay!). In the second week, I go to meet the
world (practising my Scottish accent already. Sorry, I meant
Sco'ish). To be continued.

Spoločensky
nemotorný Fábián znovu zasahuje. Jedného černocha sa pýtam,
odkiaľ je. V dokonalej, dokonca do dialektu hodenej holandčine
odpovie: „No, narodil som sa tu, som Belgičan.“ Reakcia „No ty
vole, to čumím, vau“ asi nie je úplne vhodná. Tam sa náš
rozhovor skončil.
A okrem toho, keď
nabudúce prejdem okolo kníhkupectva s vetou „Však sa len
pozrime, čo majú,“ rovno mi dajte facku. Svoje štipendium som do
slova a do písmena dobrovoľne odovzdal pani na pokladni. Kupovanie
nebudem môcť použiť) a zlámali sme jeden druhému srdcia.
A ďalej? Veľká
noc. Prvý týždeň príde svet za mnou (ad revidendum letného
kurzu z minulého roku, hurá!). Druhý týždeň idem ja za svetom
(a už brúsim škótčinu, nech tam nabalím nejaké bonny lassies).
Pokračovanie nabudúce.
