'If the climate was a bank, it would have been saved ages ago.'

Now, this quote has nothing to do with the rest of this post. I just saw it as a sticker on a car the other day and found it some serious food for thought. What do you think?
Lately, I've noticed this blog has been turning into my personal diary rather than being a well-meant reporting from the fair country of Belgium. Well, that's obviously not the point, so forgive me and I'll be trying to restrict myself from now on. After all, I'm not a self-centered bitch, am I? (I fear those of you who know me very well may actually know the answer).
Let's see what the public has been saying about this blog:

'Spellbinding, hypnotic, alluring.' Daily Telegraph

'I was in tears. Truly shattering.' Independent on Sunday

'Yo wassup, wanna see my dick?' Random internet creep

So, in today's episode:
Wanderlust! Wanderlust eveyfuckingwhere! So far, I've been trying to get the most of Gent, but after checking the Ryanair and Eurolines website, I fear I may not resist the temptation and I'll end up on the road again. Easter holidays is the time! After that, there will be no way back for me. It could be just like the old times!
(No, I don't mean the old times as in 'one of your friends is passed out on the floor holding a bottle of vodka tenderly in his hands, while the other one has smoked so much weed that he is having a conversation with the wardrobe, while yet another one grabbed a guitar and is singing a very unflattering song about your ginger-haired schoolmate.' I mean the other old times, when you packed your bag because you simply felt like it, and you ended up in Portugal, Scandinavian mountains, or even the streets of Amsterdam).
Up till now, I only treated myself with a short trip to Lille yesterday (Saturday), which is the third biggest French city just across the border with Belgium. I can't even remember the last time I set my precious foot on French soil. Must have been all the way back in 2006 or so.
So I get off the train and the first thing I hear is the sound of accordion. It doesn't get any more French than that, I thought. Fifteen minutes later, I walk into a huge march of the Communist party. This must be France, I thought. So I walked with them and shouted a little with them, 'cause I'm all for equal distribution of wealth, brother. Can I have your iPod?
The homeless hanging around the gallery of fine arts. They may be beggars, but they're dressed up much better than their colleagues in other countries. France, right? Then, teachers on strike gathered themselves on the main square, and for some reason, they combined their strike with some sort of anti-nuclear protest as well. That was the point that I decided I've had enough of France for another couple of years, and headed back home.

Have I mentioned that Belgians actually invented surrealism? And they're still living it. Last Sunday, a mysterious empty can of peaches appeared in the corridor of my dorm. At first, I thought someone may have simply forgotten it there. The next day, it moved about half a metre to the left and an empty bottle of shampoo came by. Tuesday, it moved to the right again. That was when I realized it's not just a can, it's a piece of art. Thursday, it disappeared, only to reappear briefly in the evening, before it was sucked into the fifth dimension forever the next day. Dali could have learned so much here if he ever came.
Also, my jeans are getting a bit loose, a sign that I'm losing weight. Good news? I don't know, I would rather have it that the weight only moved from my belly to my arms rather then disappearing altogether. I promised myself to go jogging regularly, but so far, I've been only able to go at one point in the week, which is always 'tomorrow.' But next week, I'm really gonna start, you'll see.
The weather's been 'fookin shite' as we say in my native Yorkshire, for the most of the week that is. Today, however, a mysterious yellow thing appeared in the sky. No idea what it might be, never saw it before in Belgium. Oh wait, Sun-day, right; now I get it. Spring is coming!
Last but not least, we had an election back at home. To that, I have only one thing to say:

If you changed “Nepal” for “Belgium” and “goat” for “pig,” it would be about right.
(P.S. Did I mention I appreciate if you take time reading this bullcrap? Thanks a bunch, reactions are always welcome).

„Keby podnebie bolo bankou, už by bolo dávno zachránené.“

Tento citát nemá nič spoločné so zvyškom dnešného príspevku.

Šokujúce.“ Independent on Sunday

„Čaf kámo, chceš videť mojho vtáka?“ Náhodný úchylák z internetu

Priatelia, v dnešnom vydaní:
Cestovná horúčka! Ej do ďábla, všade len cestovná horúčka! To už nebude žiadnej cesty späť.
Takže vystúpim z vlaku a čo nepočujem, zvuk akordeónu.

A stále ním žijú.
Pane, daj!
Mimochodom, doma sme mali voľby. K tomu mám iba jednu vec:

Kto nevládnete angličtinou, tu preklad: „Preto okamžite odchádzam do Nepálu, kde mám v úmysle žiť ako koza.“ Keby ste vymenili Nepál za Belgicko a kozu za prasa, celkom by to sedelo.

Reality? An interesting place for sure, but I wouldn't want to live there.

In many respects, that's what Erasmus is about. You don't only travel to a different place, you also find yourself in a different universe. Call it a 'discourse' if you want. Your biggest problems are that you're hungover (again), that you forgot about the interpreting class assignment, that the fries had a bit too much oil. It really is like a holiday on a faraway island, divorced from reality... Sorry, feeling kind of philosophical – and blue – this week.
Haven't touched a guitar for a month now (left them all my babies back at home), and I was surprised that for the first few weeks, I didn't really miss that chill when you get home after a hard day's work and play some shit for yourself. But now, I really see that music truly is an addiction, and my fingers have literally gotten all itchy. Sure, this may just be the result of the low standard of my personal hygiene... I'll probably have to hit a cheap store somewhere and get myself some shitty Chinese Fender copy.
Now, boy, a list of things I learned this week:
A taxi from Bruges to Gent is 100 euros. A story about why you had to take a taxi through half Belgium is priceless.
I was asked what I would say if I could speak to humankind for 30 seconds right before the end of the world. Now that's an intriguing question. But I could only come up with this personal appeal: 'You out there, I don't like half of you as much as I pretend to. However, I like a few of you much more than I'll ever be able to show. And I'm sorry I can't show it.' Is that lame? Is that gay? Whatever. Once you get used to them being around, they disappear – and you miss them, but you'll never tell. Heck, that's flipping gay.
Czech people don't how to party. Their idea of a night out is sitting around their beers and chit-chatting about nonsense. Then again, I like that too every once in a while. One man's meat is another man's poison, I guess.
The more I'm settling down here, the more I'm starting to feel that I wouldn't mind calling this place 'home' one day. Future planning has never been my strong point (how can you even plan future? It's in the future, right?), but I started asking to myself 'why the hell not?' I'm sick and tired of Central Europe, and Belgium is very livable. Most people never find out because they go to fokken France or Germany. But we, the initiated, we know.
It's very awkward when you start reading a book and you gradually realize that you are the main protagonist. Yes, Norwegian Wood by Haruki Murakami is obviously my biography. Can't decide if that's a good thing.
My hearing impairment has been getting worse. People often think I haven't understood what they've said (if they speak English or Dutch, I mean), but in fact, it's just because I wasn't able to hear them. My answer to the question 'so, what do you think about the music in this club' is normally 'oh, is there music playing?' Well, we all have to go there once, my musician fellas – the silent kingdom. At least I'm not getting whistle attacks in my ears or barotitis – yet.
Sorry about the somewhat depressing post, I've been feeling gloomy for no reason the whole week. And writing about the pubs, school and friends seems rather boring. You need to get here yourselves – seeing is believing!

SK
Realita?

Iste, to by mohol byť len výsledok nízkeho štandardu osobnej hygieny... Pravdepodobne si tu niekde budem musieť zájsť do obchodu a kúpiť si nejakú lacnú čínsku kópiu Fendra.
Taxík z Brúg do Gentu: 100 eur. Historka o tom, prečo si niekto musí vziať taxíka cez pol Belgicka: na nezaplatenie.
Pýtali sa ma, čo by som povedal ľudstvu, keby som mal k dispozícii tridsať sekúnd v televízii priamo pred koncom sveta. No a čo.
Zase asi neuškodí to občas držať v pokojných medziach. Sto ľudí, to chutí.
My zasvätení však vieme svoje.
A písať o hospodách, škole či ľuďoch nikoho nezaujíma. Budete si to musieť prísť omrknúť osobne – lepšie než stokrát počuť!

EN
'Alcohol is a slow enemy, but we have time,'

that's what you can read on the wall of 't Galgenhuisje ('House of Gallows'), the smallest café in Gent. Yet all this clubbing and café life, good as it is, is not my favourite thing to do in this city. The best way to experience the spirit of Gent is just walking in the streets and getting lost in the little alleys. Yes, I still love to do that. And you find streets with some pretty weird names, too! Kwaadham ('Angry Bacon'), Verlorenkost ('Lost Food'), Kromme Elleboog ('Twisted Elbow') or the one just around the corner from where I'm staying, Hippolyte Metdepenningenstraat ('The Street of Hippolyte Metdepenningen.' 'Metdepenningen' translates 'with the tokens,' as if being called Hippolyte wasn't bad enough itself). And more still to discover.
Language really seems to be the topic of the week. In some fast foods here, you can get a mushroom burger, or 'Muschi-burger' for short. Germans love them, and they're all nuts about them (if ya know what I mean, nudge nudge wink wink). Don't worry, I also needed to have it explained. Google it. No, they're not made of fish.
Also, my English got somewhat Britished up since I've come here. My cherished American accent is having a hard time (and trust me, it's difficult to develop an American accent for yourself that doesn't sound freaking annoying. Took some effort, all in vain). I totally dropped the r's in 'car,' 'person' or 'air.' 'Tt' in 'matter' changed from 'd' back to 't' and then disappeared altogether – ma'er. 'Sidewalk' is called 'pavement' now, and 'dudes' transformed into 'blokes.' I guess it's just the influence of the environment, and suprisingly enough (to me, anyway), it's easier for people to understand you if you lean towards British.
So, a word of advice now, blokes. Every little boy on the school's playground knows that the best way to get a girl is to pretend like you're not interested (hey ladies, that's not easy to do! As you may know, we the boys are very fragile and delicate. I hope you appreciate). Let her despair! The problem arises when you act like not interested because you're really not interested. They don't seem to understand the difference. In the end, average girls come hanging around your neck while the lady of your heart doesn't pay any attention to you or totally friendzones you. Story of my life.
On Friday, all the Erasmus students came together to offer their national dishes on an international dinner evening. I most cowardly deserted to the Czechs, pretending I have nothing to do with Slovakia (as I normally do, also when introducing myself to people. There's a whole lotta reasons for that, the most prominent being that I have no national sentiment whatsoever). Anyway, both Czech and Slovak cuisine was a huge success, even though my input into the actual cooking process was minimal, apart from peeling potatoes and dancing to Spice Girls. And in spite of every country having great stuff, nothing could beat the Belgian chocolate cream. Great times.
It's not all chocolate and cherries though. I had to start writing my MA thesis. Once you get over the whole procrastination thing, it all gets going pretty good. What's more, I actually enjoy writing it – and who wouldn't, I'm translating the best book ever, from Flemish to Slovak. If it ever hits the stores back at home, it's gonna blow everybody's mind and redefine the book business (read: I hope it will sell more than 500 copies).
Have you ever wondered how life consists of little things, most of which don't even link to one another and seem utterly silly once you put them on paper? I totally do now. There's so much love it may just as well tear me apart.
SK
Stále ma to baví. A ešte stále mám objavovať.
Skúste si to dať do googlu. Nie, ten burger nie je z ryby.
Navyše aj moja angličtina zbritizovala, odkedy som tu. Môj pestovaný americký akcent dostáva zabrať (a verte mi, nie je práve jednoduché vyvinúť pre seba americký akcent bez toho, aby znel otravne a pozérsky. Dalo mi to dosť práce, a všetko nazmar).
Keď človek raz prekoná prokrastináciu, už to ide celkom dobre.

A GENTleman's diary

A strapping young lad that I am, aged 23, I did my own laundry for the first time ever this week. The results were satisfactory, and there was a great sense of achievement. I'm starting to think that a career as a househusband (yes, that's an actual word) might just be the right thing for me.

The classes? Some great, some just good. In one of them, every single student comes from a different country (including places like Iraq, Australia, Lithuania, Armenia, you name it). Gotta love that, right? 'Earthling' is the only race.

Gave the first class of English to my new student today. Abdel, a Moroccan-Belgian interpreter from Antwerp. No, he didn't try to kill me (because we all know the people with dark skin always try to kill the people with pale skin, ain't it?), nor did he blow up the place we met in. So much for the 'Muslim problem.' And you gotta earn your living somehow, although I at first intended to take a break from teaching while in Gent...

Had a friend coming over this weekend. In case you didn't know, Austrians are surprisingly nice. They talk serious stuff. They talk silly stuff. They leave apples at your place. They don't mind when you act like a jerk and keep making fun of Hitler over and over again (well they probably do, but they don't say anything, very considerate of them. On the other hand, they also have Freud, Wittgenstein, Maria Theresia, Schrodinger – the guy with the cat – and Arnold Schwarzenegger). They make you look at a hundred different pictures of Jesus, only to find out that Jesus was a black lady (which is actually not so shocking, Jeshua is the son of Morgan Freeman after all). More of this plz.

Finding a balance between social life and your studies isn't difficult at all. You only need to realize you can only have both if you give up everything else in your life :) What a revelation. It came to me in a club the other night.

I must be doing something wrong when it comes to irony and sarcasm. People never get it when I'm being ironic, and they laugh at my seriously-meant remarks. Wha'evah. I'm still loving it here.

Sorry, I seem to be incapable of writing a coherent text anymore. But I'm trying, just like anyone whose great literary ambitions have shrunk into blog-posting over the years. Maybe the next time?

SK

Ja a sarkazmus máme problém. Ľudia moje ironické poznámky nikdy nepoberú, zato poznámky vážne berú ako dobrý vtip. No čo, uvidíme.

Navyše vždycky začínam s anglickou verziou a až potom prekladám do slovenčiny, blbec, sám neviem prečo. Ale polepším sa.

Well well well...

There go some of the loose impressions:

My camera broke the very first day. I wonder whether it's because I've bought it for like ten bucks on the internet from a guy I've never met. I'ts a shame, there's a really nice tree at the end of my street that I wanted to have on my wallpaper. I guess I'll have to go and watch it real-life, oh how zen. So sorry, no cool photos.

Apparently, my Dutch sounds way too 'Hollandic' for the local ears. I've had a few stares in the line of 'I've got no idea what you're saying, so I'll just keeping smiling at you.' Since the phrase 'Are you from the Netherlands?' is used as a substitute for 'Are you retarded?' here, I'm rather worried about this. The only way out is to assimilate and Flemish-up my speaking, which basically means secretly slipping as many French words as possible into my speech. Ca va.

The weather has been giving us quite a treat. While the Spanish are freezing their asses off (and some asses they have), the Russians from Novosibirsk can't stand the tropical heat. Me? I'm just grateful for here being it 5 grades warmer than back home. Hopefully gonna get better soon, and I'll be rocking the streets on my badass yellow bike.

Got a fine on the tram on day 2. I guess I've just acquired way too much confidence when I was riding black in the Vienna undeground the whole previous semester. So they got our whole group, which was just on the way to the Erasmus welcome party. Pay for your sins, son. Luckily, the conductor was a cool guy and told us that if you write an e-mail to the company explaining that you're a poor and confused mindless student, they may actually lower the fine. Well, definitely hope so.

Trying to fit 300 hundred people into a pub with a capacity of 100 maximum is not exactly a good idea. But the Duvel beer is as good as ever.

And so is the whole city. Oh Gent, your spirit shines like a crazy diamond!

The Belgians never cease to suprise me. Having everything perfectly organized and taken care of (I got like 10 survival/introductory/welcome guides), one would almost see them as a mere variety to Germans. Moments later, they are having the time of their lives and enjoying themselves like there's no tomorrow, showing that, in fact, they are just the French in disguise. Being 'Bourgondic' they call it.

The classes start the next week, and so does the hardcore socializing (a fancy term for 'getting drunk'). Gonna be Bourgondic as hell. So long...

Asi sa budem musieť asimilovať a svoju reč poflámštiť, čo v podstate neznamená nič iné, než tajne začať pridávať čím viac slov z francúzštiny. Ca va.

Počasie nás rozmaznáva. Zatiaľ čo Španielom mrznú zadky (a že teda nejaké majú), Rusi z Novosibirsku to tu v tej tropickej horúčave nemôžu vydržať.

No, dúfam.

To isté platí o Gente.

Belle Jum? How do you spell that again?

Feeling that I need to build some ground for this blog before I actually get started, here's a sort of an introductory post.
Erasmus has become, over the years, the number one option for European students wishing to travel abroad. Not many of them, however, get a chance to study in a country which doesn't exist. There, I said it. Also, other than most people, I'm going to a country that I actually know.
It seems the only reason Belgium hasn't torn apart already is the uncertainty that such future would pose, and the fact that Brussels has become a common possesion of all the EU citizens. I do not intend to lecture on this cute little country, but supposing that most peoples' brains turn into a tabula rasa when they're asked 'what do you associate with Belgium,' a few quick facts that you may not have known:
  • Belgium is half the size of the Czech Republic (where I come from), or roughly one twelfth of the size of Germany. (Which is a fancy way of saying 'it's tiny').
  • yet, they managed to divide the country into even smaller units. The three provinces, for example. Contrary to popular opinion, French is NOT the official language of Belgium. It is one of the THREE official languages. The north – bigger, more populous, better, creamier and juicier – speaks Dutch (sometimes referred to as 'Flemish,' but it is the same language, though a person from Amsterdam wouldn't probably understand a word of the countryside dialects). French is spoken in the south, Wallonia, with nothing but a few bankrupt steel factories left there... Oh yes, and in Brussels.
And the third one? German, spoken by about 0.72 % of the population at the border with Germany. That's 0.72%, and the government still speaks to those people in their native language, as a good servant would. One can't help thinking about the Slovaks, who are oh-so-unwilling to recognize Hungarian as the official minority language, because hey, 9% of Hungarians in our country isn't quite enough...
  • The Belgians invented quite a few things over the course of history, the best one being fries no doubt. Yeah, French fries should actually be called 'Belgian fries.' And they still taste better than anywhere else in the world. What else? Saxophone. Comics. The best beer sorts. The wonderful paintings of the 15th and 16th century, and the 20th century surrealism. Jacques Brel. Jean Claude Van Damme. The ability to exploit and play games with their bigger, mightier neighbours. Showing the Americans the city of Bruges like it's any better than any of the other Flemish cities (it's not).
  • The political system of Belgium is so complicated that I won't even get started. There are about 17 quadrizillion governments, federal, local, municipal and regional, divided according to language, region, the color of your pants and what else. So when they didn't have a federal government for more than a year, it was a big deal abroad, but not so much in Belgium itself, as the federal government does not actually possess that much power. Sorry guys, not exactly an anarchist's wet dream. Oh, and voting is compulsory in Belgium, what a wonderful way to ensure a 100% voter turnout.
  • In fact, Belgium, and especially Flanders, is the moderate version of Holland. It's flat, but not so goddamn annoyingly flat, bikes are everywhere, but not literally everywhere as in Holland, and the law is liberal, but still with more restrictions than in the Netherlands. Also, the language sounds less like a terminal case of throat cancer.

Ghent is where I'll be staying, and Ghent is the place to be. Why would anyone ever go to Bruges I just do not understand. Ghent is much more picturesque, and the city centre looks very much like it's been painted by one of the old classics. Just google it. There is less 'blah-blah' and posh attitude than in Antwerp. It is much more lively and cosy than Brussels (which is actually a rather poor and dirty city, and the international institutions kind of killed all the atmosphere there. Its a no-man's zone, and I don't feel any kind of genius loci there). Ghent (or 'Gent' in Dutch) is more like 'let me have a cup of something nice on a terrace while chatting the afternoon away with you.' It is an undiscovered jewel, and I sincerely hope it stays so.

Ok, enough for lecturing. It's gonna be all action and thrill once I get outta plane, promise.

Beľgyckô? Môžeš mi to vyhláskovať?

No, tak som to povedal.
No a v Bruseli.
Tretí jazyk? Nemčina, ktorou hovorí asi 0,72% obyvateľstva na hranici s Nemeckom. Zopakujme si to – 0,72%.
Komiks. To najlepšie pivo. Nádherné maľby z 15. a 16. storočia, a v 20. storoší surrealizmus. Jacquesa Brela. Jeana Claudea Van Damma. Schopnosť vykorisťovať a hrať sa so svojimi väčšími, mocnejšími susedmi.
Občanom slúži asi 17 kvadritriliónov vlád, federálnych, miestnych, mestských a okresných, rozdelených ešte podľa jazyka, oblasti, farby vašich treniek a neviem čo všetko.

Len si to skúste vygoogliť.

Keď už raz vystúpim z lietadla, bude to len samé napätie a vzrušenie, sľubujem.
